The Mystery of Melody

September 14, 2017

The first thing that hits me about any song is the melody. I love words, but the melody hits first. For me, words can’t save a bad melody, but a great melody can save the shit out of some bad words.

Next is the chord progression. Sometimes, that is more something you feel than think about. Certain chord changes evoke certain emotions. That bleeds into the other things that excite me - the feel or tone of the song. That stuff gives each song its own personality.

Some songs transport you to another dimension, like Sharon Van Etton’s Tarifa.

Or the immortal Fade Into You by Mazzy Star.

Some make you move, like LCD Soundsystem's Dance Yrslf Clean (wait for it, it takes a while, but when it hits....):

Or, of course, David Bowie’s Modern Love:

And some make you think, like The National's Sea of Love

Or Bob Dylan’s Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest.

I’ve written a lot of songs over the years. I always write with a guitar. I can’t say if it’s because I love guitar, I do, or if it’s just because that’s the instrument that I happened to pick up. Either way, it’s the same end result.

So Pale Monsters is releasing a brand new single. I've been writing this song for a LONG time, but that's a story for another post.

The song is called All This Time We Wait. Fittingly, we are waiting a little longer before we put it out there, but it’ll be here before you know it.
